Last night the Oscar party I co-host celebrated its tenth anniversary. It was a celebration worthy of the phrase ’10 Years in the Making’. We’ll come back to that in a minute.
First come my thoughts on the Oscars.
I really enjoyed Seth Macfarlene as host. The man could sing and dance and made me laugh. I loved how nothing was off limits with him and he wasn’t afraid to make light of when his own jokes fell flat.
Some categories were not surprises when the victors were announced. Daniel Day Lewis & Adele winning best actor and original song respectively. (I loved seeing a bond flick finally win some Oscar love). Anne Hathaway’s win was not a surprise either but a bit of a disappointment. That’s not a slight against a performance worthy of an Oscar nomination but I thought Sally Field was incredible as Mary Todd Lincoln and that’s ther performance that was truly worthy of an Oscar win.
I was pleased that Searching for Sugarman won best documentary because I loved that movie.
In October I left Argo saying it was the movie to beat at the academy awards and for the other eight features nominated for best picture well done but I fully support Argo’s victory.
I was surprised at the tie in sound editing between Skyfall and Zero Dark Thirty. I loved Mark Walberg’s reaction when he read the envelope.
Ok now that that’s out of my system the party itself. 45 people give or take a few attended. It was awesome to experience such a night for the tenth time.
My parties have a formula that has worked now for years. We start at 7 and as guests fill out their ballots they wine and dine and catch up with each other. Many only see each other this one night of the year and talk as if they saw one another only the previous day. Before the show starts I do a few trivia games and continue to sprinkle these games during the telecast commercials. People chair on their favorites movies during the telecast, cheer when they win, boo when they loose and many times the same reaction happens during the same category.
This year was a great party with a great group of people cheering and booing and winning prizes. The prizes are themed dvd baskets.
So with another successful party I can’t wait till the party turns 11 next winter.

The phrase from the night:
ReplyDeleteWhalberg: It's a tie. No BS.
